Blind Date with a Book: A Surprise Encounter with Armenian Literature
On Sunday, June 7, the AYF Glendale “Roupen” and Pasadena “Nigol Touman” Chapters hosted a heartfelt and imaginative event, Blind Date with a Book, at Sardarabad Bookstore inside the Glendale Youth Center. The goal? To bring the community together through Armenian literature—all while supporting a cause close to home.
The fundraiser was designed to benefit the name day celebration of the village of Ashan in Artsakh, with all proceeds going toward the upcoming event. But beyond fundraising, it was a cultural experience meant to reconnect community members with the stories, voices, and revolutionary spirit found in Armenian books.
Wrapped in Mystery, Rooted in Culture
The event’s signature twist was in its presentation: every book was wrapped in plain paper, hiding its title and cover. Short handwritten descriptions on each package hinted at the genre or subject matter, allowing readers to choose their "date" based on intrigue and intuition. Each selection was rooted in Armenian themes—from historical memoirs to revolutionary thought and cultural essays.
This unique format not only added a layer of excitement but also encouraged guests to explore literature they may not have chosen otherwise.
“Growing up as an AYF Glendale member, I have always valued literary works—particularly in Armenian genres,” said Glendale Chapter Chair Lana Tolmajian.
“Having Sardarabad Bookstore at our fingertips is truly a treasure. We are so happy we got to share our passion for Armenian revolutionary books and literature with the community today.”
A Success in Storytelling and Solidarity
The event drew strong attendance from AYF members and supporters, creating an atmosphere filled with curiosity, community, and meaningful conversation. Guests left not only with new books but also with a renewed sense of cultural connection.
In every way, Blind Date with a Book achieved its goals—raising funds, elevating Armenian literature, and bringing people together around a shared heritage.
